Trash Talk

Hardcore heroes Trash Talk have been announced to join the Australian Soundwave Festival in 2011. Press Record’s Alicia Bolton had a chat to bassist Spencer Pollard about the new record ‘Eyes and Nines’, crazy fans from Belgium and sneaky health insurance.

Hey Spencer, how are you?

I’m good yeah.

Where are you guys at the moment?

We’re in Seattle at our friend’s apartment.

Oh nice, and you started tour yesterday with 50 Lions and Sick of it all…Is this the first tour since the release of ‘Eyes and Nines’?

Yeah that tour started last night. We’re here hanging out, decompressing after our drive up here. It’s the first show since the official release. It came out in the UK while we were out there so we had some copies of it out there but it’s the first show since it came out in hardcopy in the United States.

In three words, how would you describe your sound?

Rock’n’Roll.

You’ve been announced to tour Australia with the Soundwave team. How did this come about?

You know I’m not too sure. We just kind of got hit up about it and from my understanding we all just sat down and thought about if we wanted to go to Soundwave and our first reaction was like, hell yeah!

Have you heard of any other bands that we don’t yet know about for Soundwave?

As far as I know, it’s just whoever has been announced so far.

Ohh okay. You guys toured Australia last year. Who was that tour with?

I was in school and I tricked the US Government into giving me health insurance because I had to get an operation.

Oh okay, so…what happened?

I had a hernia over the summer, a couple of summers back. In order to get health insurance, I had to go to school to get health insurance.

Oh no sorry I meant like you didn’t come to Australia? Or you did?

Oh no I wasn’t able to come with the rest of the band because I was recovering. They toured with Extortion out there.

So Soundwave will be your first time in Australia then? Are you excited?

Yeah I’m ecstatic, I can’t wait to get down there. All I hear is good stuff. It will be a good experience.

Alright so you guys started Trash talk collective record company – after working through numerous other companies first.

What provoked the decision to start your own record company?

It was something that we’d always wanted to do and it pretty much came down to the point that this was the time to do it. We decided to venture away from you know um…we just wanted to do it on our own. It’s been great to have total control of the releases and to be the ones that are putting in the hours the get the final product.

Eyes and Nines’ was released about a month ago. Could you tell us a bit about it and how long did this album take to produce from scratch?

We were writing songs on the road and I remember the first time we actually practiced the songs…it ended up being the title track for ‘Eyes and Nines’. We were in western Virginia and from that point the final release was like nine months later. We were in the studio for a few days and recorded some tracks then went on tour. When we got back we were setting up the final takes and the final session for about a week and a half.

What happened in the process of this album that was new or different for you? Maybe the facts of working with your own record company and such?

We spent more time in the studio. The songs took more time to mature and develop. We had to have reference points with what we wanted to do and achieve with this record. We feel the songs are more structured and focused than other releases from us.

I loved the cover art. I presume you also have heaps of cool merch for this album?

Yeah we’ve got tons of merch for this album. Check it out at www.trashtalkhc.com.

Our buddy Jay, he does the cover work. He did the artwork that’s under the stencil on the cover. It’s a piece he did called African American. He also did the artwork for another single.

Tell us a bit about your musical background…How did you get to where you are today?

Oh man. I grew up listening to basically whatever my parents listened to. I listened to The Doors, Pink Floyd, Metallica…late 60s early 70s my Mum listened to a lot of RnB, soul and Motown stuff. Basically 4th and 5th grade a lot of Jimi Hendrix and the guitars got me hooked and then I just wanted to hear more and more distorted stuff.

And where do you get inspiration from to create music?

It comes from all over the place. We love music and we don’t exactly have inspiration to create songs a certain way but we love playing together and whatever comes out, well it comes out. It’s just our love of creating.

Things get pretty hectic with in the pits at your shows. Craziest live moment?

We played a show in Belgium last Summer and we played on the floor. There was a 6 foot stage but we played the floor and during that set I looked up and I couldn’t see where the kid jumped from but all I saw was this body doing like an ariel summersault over my head onto the crowd and that was a pretty crazy moment I guess.

Oh my God!! Do they crowds ever get too violent and out of control?

Mostly controlled…

Oh okay. Do you enjoy playing floorshows, or rather be up on a stage?

Oh no, if we feel like we want to play the floor on a certain act then we’ll play the floor. We definitely don’t prefer the stage to playing a floor show at all.

Which is your favourite song to perform live? What attracts the most energy and reaction from the crowd?

As of now I’m really enjoying playing the new songs off the ‘Eyes and Nines’ album. It’s just exciting to play new stuff and obviously now that the record’s out people are hearing these songs and we’re just starting to see reactions to these songs. It’s really cool.

What is the most rewarding part of playing with Trash Talk?

We’re really lucky to be able to travel and play music we love. It’s very humbling to go across the world and have people who can’t speak more than five or ten words of English on the street come in and scream four or five songs off the record. It’s very humble and cool to see.

What’s happening in the next chapter for Trash Talk?

For now we’re doing these dates and heading out to the UK. We have a summer residency over there playing festivals and headlining some shows in England. So we’re going to do that, then head over your way for Soundwave.

Before we go, you guys have entered the Kerrang awards for best Newcomer yeah? Where can fans go to vote for you?

The voting I believe closes today but you should go to the website when you get off the phone and vote!

Sure thing, I will do. Best of luck dude and we’ll see you at soundwave!

Thanks bye
